For the life of me I can't remember why I bought this album. I think it was because I read somewhere that this was the cornerstone of new progressive metal, and I didn't know any better. And oh how wrong I was!

The strange thing is that the reviews on Amazon.com make this CD out to be the a metal classic. Well, I completely disagree. It's aweful. Cliche's abound, the songs get on your nerves, the writing is terrible, the mix sucks, the keyboards suck, the guitar just doesn't seem to fit, and Keith Sudano's vocals are incredibly annoying!

The songs just piss me off. But so does everything else. I can't put my finger on it, but everything is wrong with this album. It should be great, but it isn't. I think it might be a combination of weak songwriting, not-so-brilliant performances, and a strange "yes this song is really important" overtone. But none of it adds up. Maybe because it's trying to be metal but isn't really. I don't know.

Maybe the guys are just trying too hard? I haven't heard any of their other albums.. maybe they are better? Who knows. Who cares. A great example of complicated song writing doesn't neccesarily get you anywhere. Check out track 8 for a great example of how much this album annoys me. Then track 2, then all the other ones. I don't think there's 1 decent riff on this album. Maybe that's the problem.

Possibly the only ok track on this cd is track 9, "Rejection", but even then the drum-solo interludes are pretty bad!!

Never buy a metal CD with a nude guy on the front.
