The only reason why I bought this album is because I heard that it was Satriani's favourite album for years. I remember when first getting it that I wasn't too impressed - so I've pulled it out and had another listen. Imagine a 1975's funk sound (a-la Herbie Hancock), with some dude soloing over the top. Pretty much sums it up. There's some reasonably good solo's in here - nothing spectacular in comparison with the new stuff that's out there. I notice with interest that there's two tracks on here written by Stevie Wonder. The first one, "Case We've Ended As Lovers", is a wonderful ballad - you could really imagine a sax playing the melody line. The second, "Thelonius", is probably my favourite track on the whole album. He's using some bizarre pedal - sounds a bit like a moog synth. A bit later Beck got into the habit of turning his tone knob all the way down and the treble on his amp all the way up. Makes for an interesting sound, but he doesn't do it on any of the tracks on this CD (I think). There's a re-issue of this CD floating around, where all of the tracks are remastered. However this original sounds pretty good to my ears. If you see this version cheap (and you probably will 'cos it's an old classic), by all means pick it up. My ranking: 3 - Was ok |
