You'd probably know a song or two off this album. "Cult of Personality" is still played as interludes on the Letterman show every now and then. One of the very few metal bands (that I'm aware of) with four black guys - metal seems to be a very white dominated area! Is this a cultural thing? Hmm, more research needed.

So, Vivid. Vernon Reid is a great guitarist! It's a pity that his guitar sound completely sucks, almost to the point of not being able to hear what he's playing half the time. I think he's cranked up the delay and distortion just a bit too much, or maybe the engineer/mixer didn't have a clue?

But anyway, the CD still rocks. Singer Corey Glover has a great voice, the rest of the band can really rock and Reid can shred! And LC can pump out the funk like they've only got 2 minutes to play. But more importantly, they can write really, really good songs. Every song is really enjoyable and has a great melody. Favourites "Cult of Personality", "Desperate People" and "Funny Vibe".

What I really like about Living Colour is their intelligent lyrics. With too many metal bands singing about "the eyes of medusa" or "all men play on ten", LC are a breath of fresh air. eg:

"I look at the T.V.
Your America is doing well
I look out the window
My America's catching hell
I just want to know which way do I go to get to your America?"

I read on their official site that Living Colour are still going, and have been doing live covers of "Back In Black"! Apparently Doug Wimbish has joined the band - who is a virtuoso in his own right, cool.

I've only got this album on tape (cue old man voice: 'I remember back in the day we didn't need any fancy-pants digital CD techno crap) so it's been a while since I've given it a listen!

Anyway, from memory, it's a really great album. Lots of heavy tracks, a little bit overproduced though, which turned off a lot of people. Anyway, I quite enjoyed it.
