Friedman, Marty
Ex-megadeth guitarist, now solo artist living in Japan. Started out as a guitarist in the aptly-named band "Cacophany", alongside with monster shredder Jason Becker.

Can't believe this one stayed off the radar for so long! The title "Music For Speeding" gives you a fairly good understanding of what kind of music you're in for; fast, rocking, heavy and lots of solos! However there's also a big range of tunes here, from crunchingly heavy, to a Vai-like ballad, to Japanese power-pop, and everything in between. Friedman is a fantastic shredder, and has the unique skill of having his own soloing style. With players like Satriani, SRV and Brian May, you can tell that it's them after about five seconds. Friedman is in the same group; you can just tell that it's him. He has a very unusual style of playing that's great to listen to. On his last tour in Japan, uber-guitarist Ron Jarzobek joined him as his second guitarist - what a show that would have been! A few video's are available on Jarzobek's site. (Friedman also did a few guest solo's on Spastic Ink's latest CD.) This album is kick-arse! Lots of unbeat fast tunes, the occasional breather, and heaps of interesting and weird ideas. Friedman seems to specialise in using about a hundred different guitar tones, all for different purposes. It all blends together wonderfully and sounds fantastic. There's quite a few electronic sounds on this album, lots of techno drums, quite a few synths, and a lot of effects applied on the guitars. Never too much though, and it's all to the enhancement of the track. (In case you're wondering, it doesn't sound anything like Satriani's "Engines of Creation") Track 3, "Ripped" is currently my favourite (I'll have to try to learn that one!), with the intro track coming in a close second. The last 4 tunes on this CD all blend together and can really be considered one big monster track. A great CD that is definitely worth your cash! My ranking: 4 - Really enjoyed it |
