Who the hell is Ron Jarzombek? Ron is a unique shredder. He doesn't think of music in the same way that we do. Instead of melodies, notes, feelings and passion, he think of abstractions, possibilities, combinations and synchronicities. He can also shred better than superman on paper recycling day. He also played with Marty Friedman on a tour for the "Music For Speeding" album. Spastic Ink's drummer is Ron's brother Bobby, who plays drums in Rob Halford's band and is also as talented as Ron. The bass duties are handled by Pete Perez, who goes above and behind what is strictly neccesary. From the opening track The Mad Data Race, you know that you're in for something special. After years of listening to guitarists after a while I start to wonder if someone is ever going to do something new and interesting. Ron Jarzombek manages to push the envelope of what is possible on the guitar, but more importantly he shows what is possible with a band. A lot of instrumental rock consists of an adequate backing band with a great guitarist (think Satriani). Often a more exciting approach taken up by Jarzombek (and to a lesser extent Steve Morse) is having a fantastic guitarist and an even better band. Ok, so they're not actually incredible. A better phrase would be gob-smacking jaw-dropping ridiculousness. Bass player Pete Perez seems to be able to double anything that Ron can throw at him, and his brother Bobby just swallows it up. After I heard the opening song I immediately had to hear it again. And then about four times again after that. And then I tried to learn it. And then I gave up. However Ron is nice enough to contribute an entire transcription in PDF form entirely for his listeners! What more could you possibly want? Ron has clearly reached the point where he is bored by normal music. Not content to just write a bunch of ridiculous solo's, each song on this CD is based around a particular concept. There's "See, and It's Sharp!", which consists of two notes, C and C#. "A Wild Hare" is a track written in perfect time to a cartoon. The rest of the tracks are a unique blend of weird ideas. Definitely recommended! My ranking: 4 - Really enjoyed it |
