Malmsteen, Yngwie

Ahh, Malmsteen, Malmsteen, Malmsteen: 1. Biggest ego in the universe 2. Made neoclassical a genre 3. Invented instrumental shredding as an artform 4. Plays ridiculously and stupidly fast 5. Completely stuck in the 80's

Well, this album is his best. There, I said it. Any guitarist calling himself a guitarist should, and must, own this album. For some reason one of his biggest hits is the opening track, "Black Star", but I like "Far Beyond The Sun" so much more. Amazing and great stuff.

Malmsteen seems to have two tempo's for soloing. Very slow and stupidly fast. Can't the guy learn to pace himself a bit? Or maybe play some 16th or 8 notes instead of 3000th notes? Is that too much to ask?

Anyway, this album also features the fantastic keyboard shredding of Jens Johansson. The guy's web page is pretty humerous. Check it out.

Nice collection of some Malmsteen Classics, such as "Black Star" and "Liar". Also contains a few live tracks, including a great version of "Trilogy Suite Op: 5", and a blues jam. An extended version of "Making Love" is included on this CD (just in case you really wanted an extra guitar solo :). Not a bad collection, great if you can pick it up cheap.

Ten years on and he's still playing the same, albeit a bit faster. While you have to respect that, it gets a little bit tired after a while.

The production on this album is quite good! Things have come along way in ten years, and this album sounds really good compared to the earlier stuff. This album surprised me a bit with its variety - while I was expecting 12 neoclassical metal tracks, we get a opening power-metal song, then a blues-quenched wah based song, then a nice medium tempo heavy ballad. Then comes the acoustic guitars, ripping into a nice slow ballad anthem-y type track.

Malmsteens tone also rocks on this album. Check out the intro to "Hairtrigger". Singer Mike Verscera also has a great voice and fits this music perfectly. It's a pity that Yngwie can't seem to hold onto a singer for more than an album or two.

Concert Review (1999)

You name it, he probably played it

I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing the man himself in concert a few years back. The gig was great. Really good sound. He played all his favourites, played some acoustic stuff, and got everyone singing "I am a Viking".

Well, the gig just went on for too long! Too many guitar solos (but what else could you expect), and after three hours of hearing harmonic minor arpeggios it starts to get a little... boring.

I also got to experience the Malmsteen ego first hand. A friend of mine worked at the light-hiring place for the venue. Apparently, Malmsteen requested "No White Lights". So up go the coloured red and blue and everything else lights. What happens two songs into the gig? Yngwie starts talking to the lights guy, saying "turn up the brightness, man, people need to see my solo's". Two songs later, he keeps on abusing the lights guy calling him an "f'ing monkey". By this point the dude had obviously had enough, and apprently he pissed off! All of a sudden the lights stopped doing anything for a few minutes. Someone else took over and everything was ok. What that really neccesary?

He must have a sense of humour though. Anyone who names their latest album after an incident that makes them look like a complete idiot.. (on a certain aeroplane) must have guts or be completely stupid.
